| A footpath following 20 kilometers of the Cowichan River provides an easy day-long (7-hour) hike. Access to the trail is from two trailheads: The Cowichan Fish and Game Association Range and clubhouse off Vaux Road (eastern end) where the path follows the ridges of the river occasionally veering onto old logging roads of the Canadian National Railway right-of-way. Shorter loop trails exist at the two trail heads and from a spectacular abandoned rail trestle spanning a deep river-carved gorge, Mile 66 Trestle. Huge horsehoe gravel cliffs tumble to the river, 50 foot deep crystal pools astound. The footpath includes old growth forest as well as massive notched stumps, evidence of logging from eras gone. Guests at Sahtlam Lodge and Cabins have access to the footpath midpoint via private rivercart. Skutz Falls, (the western trailhead) is accessed from Riverbottom Road or from the Cowichan Valley Highway. | |
